SharePoint: Client Does Not Support opening this list with Windows Explorer — Using IE 7

When working in SharePoint Services 3.0 today I encountered a strange error. I tried to open the Shared Documents folder in the document center using Windows Explorer view and I got following error message ("Client Does Not Support opening this list with Windows Explorer").
